When Be The Best Time To Go Fishing, GUYK ???
Some folks have asked me "when is the best time to go fishing?" And my reply is "right now! There ain't no bad time." Hell folks up north build these little houses on the ice that look very similar to outdoor shithouses...then they cut a hole in the ice so they can fish. Yeah, I have done it myself and as long as I could keep my feet warm I enjoyed it.
But my favorite time to go fishing is at daybreak. I just like the sun rise on the water and seems that the fish like to feed about that time and it is particularly a good time to fish the Florida saltwater flats. On the Oklahoma lakes for catfish I found that the fish seemed to feed more at night because we usually got more fish off the juglines in the mornings than we did in the afternoons. However, if the bait is right and the fish are in the mood it don't make no difference what time of day it be...this mess of fish came out of lake Ft Gibson during the middle of a day...

Catchin' and Bleedin'
Catchin' catfish with jug lines is not all that difficult..just a matter of the right bait on the right lake at the right time. This shot was in June on Lake Waurika and the fish was one of the smaller ones we kept. April and May seem to be the best months on that Lake although we have caught a lot of fish during the cooler fall months. Summer time is okay with rod and reel although it is blistering hot..100F plus most days and the fish will die in the live well because of the temperature.
Some folks have asked me how we clean catfish..the first thing is bleeding them. We hang them and just cut off the tails and let them bleed out. Then instead of skinning the fish we fillet it. I like to leave about an eighth of inch of flesh on the skin. This keeps the fat and some of the darker collored flesh off the fillet. I always cut out the blood line and take ALL the dark flesh and fat off the fillet. Doing so will make for a milder tasting fish.

CATFISHING ON LAKE WAURIKA OKLAHOMA
LAKE WAURIKA Oklahoma is a medium sized flood control lake built and maintained by the US Army Corp of Engineers. It is a relatively new lake..built in the early 1960's and is far enough away from the major population centers that it doesn't have an extreme amount of pressure on the fish population..but during May of 2007 my brother-in-law and I put the pressure on the Blue Catfish.
This blog is the start of a log of the fish we caught on Lake Waurika and Lake Fort Gibson Oklahoma and how we caught them and cleaned them and stored them. I don't claim to be the best catfisherman in the world but at least this time I damn sure got my share...
